332 Community Service: Walk-a-Mile Event

Local 332 has been a long-time sponsor of the YWCA of Silicon Valley’s Walk A Mile In Their Shoes event. The event raises money and awareness for sexual and domestic violence. About forty 332 members gathered for the walk on Santana Row in San Jose. Participants are encouraged to wear high heels. Though humorous and fun, if you’re not used to wearing them (and even if you are), walking a mile in heels is challenging and painful.

Local 332’s RENEW Committee, led by Zahira Elmansoumi, Devon Nuñez, Andrew Hollerbach, and Kevin Novak, organized the local’s sponsorship and recruited members to participate. RENEW stands for Reach Out and Engage the Next Generation of Electrical Workers for members 35 and under. The group cultivates leaders, bridges the generational gap within the local, creates ties between labor and the community, and mobilizes members for events like this. To get involved, email Zahira at ibew332renew@gmail.com.

Tens of thousands of people throughout our area experience sexual and/or domestic violence. If you or someone you know needs help, contact the YWCA at (800) 572-2782 or SAFECHATSV.
